Texas to North Dakota Movers

Texas to North Dakota Movers

Texas and North Dakota share more than people think: energy jobs, big skies and a lot of open highway between them. Fort Worth to Fargo is about 1,070 road miles, and Houston to Williston, in the heart of the Bakken oil field, is closer to 1,650. Condor Moving Systems has moved Texans to other states since 2003, with our own trucks and crews from Fort Worth and Houston. We pick up anywhere in Texas and deliver to Fargo, Bismarck, Grand Forks, Minot, Williston, Dickinson and the towns between them.

What Every North Dakota Move Includes

  1. Disassembly of beds, tables, desks and other furniture that has to come apart to travel.
  2. Moving pads wrapped around each furniture piece.
  3. A numbered inventory, with a tag on every item and a list you sign before the truck leaves Texas.
  4. Placement of furniture and boxes in the rooms you pick at your North Dakota home.
  5. Reassembly of whatever the crew took apart.
  6. One consultant who handles your move from the first call to the last box.
  7. Released value protection, the basic level federal rules require, at 60 cents per pound per article. It's moving coverage rather than insurance. Full value replacement can be bought through Baker International; Condor doesn't sell it directly.

Packing isn't part of the base price. Boxing kitchens, closets, books and garage shelves is an add-on on every move. You can have us pack everything, pack only the fragile rooms, or do it all yourself.

How Long Delivery Takes

The standard delivery window from Texas to North Dakota is 1 to 21 business days, and it begins on the first day you're available to receive. North Dakota sits at the top of the map for us, so it gets the longer window. Plenty of loads land early in the window; just don't build your plans around that.

What you can lock in: the pickup date, which we guarantee, and, if you add it for an extra charge, a guaranteed delivery date. What you can fall back on: storage in transit, so the truck doesn't have to wait on your closing. What you should carry with you: anything you'd need in the first week.

Because North Dakota sits far past an 8-hour drive from Texas, next-day delivery on a dedicated truck isn't an option here.

Winter and the Red River

North Dakota winters are long and cold, with temperatures well below zero and blowing snow that can close I-29 and I-94 for hours. Our drivers watch NDDOT road reports and won't drive into a closure. A winter delivery still works, but give yourself flexibility, keep the driveway and front walk clear, and make sure the heat is on in the new home before the truck arrives.

Spring brings a different issue in the Red River Valley. The river that divides Fargo from Moorhead, Minnesota, floods in some years when the snow melts quickly. If your new home is near the river in Fargo or Grand Forks, ask your agent about the property's flood history and plan an early-spring delivery with a little extra room in the calendar.

Texas to North Dakota on I-29 and I-94

For Fargo and Grand Forks, our trucks usually follow I-35 north from Dallas-Fort Worth through Oklahoma City and Wichita, take the Kansas Turnpike to Kansas City, then run I-29 north through Omaha and Sioux Falls up the Red River Valley. Bismarck and western North Dakota are often reached through central Kansas and Nebraska on I-135 and US-81 before joining I-94. Houston departures run up I-45 to Dallas and then follow the same lanes.

Lanes From Central and South Texas

From Dallas, Fargo is about 1,080 miles, close to 19 hours of driving. Houston loads run about 1,315 miles to Fargo and 1,420 to Bismarck. Austin and San Antonio trucks, 1,260 to 1,340 miles from Fargo, go straight up I-35 through Waco and Dallas. Western North Dakota, including Williston and Dickinson, is often reached on US-85, a busy truck route through oil country. Minot and Grand Forks are about 1,250 and 1,150 miles from Fort Worth.

Punctual, good and professional. Condor Moving System is my go-to moving guys now. Fairly priced for the level of professional moving service they provide to their customers. They were very good in communication to me and among themselves. I have had many bad experiences with multiple movers before it. Condor is the first ever company that I found nobody to complain about, which is maybe a pretty rare thing to say about relocators.

They recognized my items and if I needed to change the things, they did it for me rapidly. Very friendly teamwork. Will surly use them again!

Oil Country and Mountain Time

Many Texans who move to North Dakota go to work in the Bakken, in and around Williston, Watford City and Dickinson. Housing there changes with oil prices, from new subdivisions to crew housing and rentals. Tell us if your new place is on a gravel road or in a newly built area that may not show up in navigation apps.

Most of North Dakota uses Central Time, the same as Texas, but much of the southwestern part of the state, including Dickinson, is on Mountain Time. Confirm delivery times in the local clock.

Pricing Your Move North

Condor prices every long-distance move by the cubic foot. The survey measures how much truck space your household needs, and the per-cubic-foot rate already covers the haul from Texas to North Dakota; distance isn't billed separately. Long-distance moves start at $1,200.

Because size drives the total, these help most:

  • Don't haul Texas lawn and pool equipment north; it'll sit unused most of the year.
  • Bring the winter gear you already own, but buy heavy coats and boots after you arrive if you don't have them.
  • Pack linens, books and closets yourself and have the crew pack the breakables.

Other lines that can appear: packing and materials, crating, stairs or elevators, a shuttle truck, storage in transit, extra coverage and a guaranteed delivery date.

A binding number

The estimate you sign is binding. Add or drop items after the survey and the foreman writes up the change on moving day, before the crew loads, for you to approve first. There is no surprise total after delivery.

The survey

We quote from a video survey on Zoom, from a phone call with your list of furniture and boxes (you sign a written survey waiver to make a phone quote binding), or, inside the Dallas-Fort Worth area only, from an in-person visit.

Universities, Air Force Bases and Utilities

North Dakota State in Fargo and the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks bring in faculty and graduate students every August.

The state has two Air Force bases: Minot AFB and Grand Forks AFB. We do PPM moves (service member arranges, government reimburses), retiree moves and government-arranged shipments. If your orders call for certified weight tickets, we provide them; that's the only kind of move we weigh.

Xcel Energy serves Fargo and Grand Forks, Montana-Dakota Utilities serves Bismarck, Minot and much of the west, and Otter Tail Power covers many smaller towns in the east. Rural electric cooperatives serve much of the countryside. Set up service before delivery so the house is warm.

Getting a North Dakota Home Ready

Many North Dakota homes have basements, entry vestibules and attached garages designed for winter. Measure basement stairways if you plan to put a sectional or a pool table down there. In Fargo and Bismarck, most streets are easy for a large truck, but snow emergency routes have parking rules during storms. In newer Williston and Watford City subdivisions, unpaved streets can get muddy in spring; send photos so we can plan where the truck will park.

The cold also affects what you pack. Liquids, paint, houseplants and electronics don't do well in an unheated trailer in January. Carry those in your car, and keep medicine, documents and chargers with you. We'll talk through anything else that's sensitive during your survey.

Booking With Condor

Condor Moving Systems is a Woman-Owned moving company. Our office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM CT, and we hold interstate authority under USDOT 1126171 and MC-458180, with TxDMV 006041428C for moves inside Texas.

  • Book at least two weeks ahead. A long run to North Dakota needs a truck and crew set aside, and more notice gives you more dates to pick from.
  • Moving for work? We bill employers and relocation management companies directly, so your company can pay us without you fronting the cost.

North Dakota License and Registration

An out-of-state driver's license is generally valid in North Dakota for 60 days after you become a resident, so plan to transfer it in your first two months. Vehicles should be titled and registered once you're a resident. See the NDDOT license transfer page for the documents to bring.

North Dakota has a state income tax and a sales tax, and registration fees depend on the vehicle's weight and age. North Dakota is the one state without voter registration: once you've lived in your precinct for 30 days, you vote by showing an ID with your current North Dakota address, which is one more reason to update your license soon after you arrive. Engine block heaters are common, so ask whether your new garage or parking spot has an outlet.

North Dakota Moving FAQ

When will the truck get to North Dakota?

Within 1 to 21 business days of the first day you can accept delivery. North Dakota is one of our northernmost destinations, and loads to the far north are scheduled with the longer window. If timing is critical, a guaranteed delivery date can be added for an extra charge.

Is the distance to North Dakota billed separately?

No. The per-cubic-foot rate already includes the trip. Long-distance moves start at $1,200.

Do you offer storage?

Storage in transit, at our Fort Worth or Houston location. The first 30 days cost nothing; after that, storage is billed monthly.

Do you deliver to North Dakota in January?

Yes. We plan routes around weather and stay inside the delivery window if storms close the interstate. Clear the driveway and have the heat on.

Do I need to take my furniture apart?

No. Basic disassembly and reassembly is included on every Condor move.

What if I add items after the survey?

The foreman writes up the change to your binding estimate before loading begins. Nothing is loaded until you approve it.

Is there a deadline for claims?

Yes: 9 months from delivery. Use our file a claim page, and our team will walk you through it.
