What to Expect Delivering in Illinois
Chicago is one of the few cities in the country where a delivery can be stopped before it starts. Permits, certificates of insurance and elevator windows all have to be in hand, and winter sets the terms from December onward. Here is what we sort out ahead of your date.
City Moving Permits & No-Parking Signs
Much of Chicago requires a permit and posted temporary no-parking signs to hold curb space for a moving truck, arranged through the ward office or the city in advance. Without them there is often nowhere legal to stop and the truck risks being ticketed or towed. Tell us the address early so the permit can be filed in time.
High-Rise COIs & Elevator Reservations
Downtown, River North, Streeterville, the South Loop and Gold Coast buildings require a certificate of insurance naming the building and the management company, with specific limits, plus a reserved service elevator in a fixed block — usually weekdays only. Buildings turn crews away over an incorrect certificate.
Three-Flats & Narrow Stairwells
A great deal of Chicago housing is two- and three-flat walk-ups with tight turns, narrow stairwells and rear wooden porch staircases. Larger furniture sometimes has to be disassembled or taken through a window. Tell us the floor and the stair situation when you request your estimate.
Alley Loading & Side Streets
Many Chicago properties load from a rear alley rather than the street, and alleys are narrow, often blocked by dumpsters and impassable to a full-size truck. Where that is the case the shipment is shuttled in with a smaller vehicle, quoted upfront rather than added later.
Winter Weather & Lake Effect
From December through March, snow, ice and lake-effect conditions affect both the drive and the delivery. Sidewalks and stairs need clearing before a crew can safely carry. Conditions are monitored ahead of your date and a shipment is held rather than run into a closure.
Suburban HOAs & Move Windows
Naperville, Schaumburg, Arlington Heights, Hinsdale and the collar-county communities are more straightforward than the city, but condo associations there still set permitted move hours and require notice. Send us the association rules with your estimate request.
