Sioux Falls loads usually take I-35 north from Dallas-Fort Worth through Oklahoma and Kansas, then I-29 from Kansas City through Omaha and up into the eastern part of the state. Rapid City and the Black Hills are a different trip: trucks often cross Nebraska and approach from I-90, or come north through Colorado and Wyoming. Pierre sits in the middle of the state, away from the interstates, on US highways. Houston moves start with the drive up I-45.

Distances From Texas Cities
Dallas to Sioux Falls is about 840 miles, close to 15 hours of driving. From Houston, Sioux Falls is about 1,080 miles and Rapid City about 1,300. Austin is about 1,020 miles from Sioux Falls, and San Antonio about 1,100; both follow I-35 north through Oklahoma and Kansas. Brookings and Watertown are just up I-29 from Sioux Falls, Aberdeen is in the northeast on US-12, and Pierre is reached by US-14 or US-83.

East River and West River
South Dakotans divide the state at the Missouri River. East River, including Sioux Falls, Brookings, Watertown and Aberdeen, is flat farm country on Central Time. West River, including Rapid City, Spearfish and the Black Hills, is mostly on Mountain Time, with hills, canyons and pine forest. A delivery to Rapid City is an hour behind one in Sioux Falls.
Black Hills homes around Lead, Deadwood, Hill City and Keystone often sit on narrow, winding roads where a full-size trailer can't reach. In those cases, we bring a smaller truck for the last leg. Shuttle service is charged in addition to your estimate and starts at $450.

South Dakota Move Costs
Long-distance pricing at Condor is per cubic foot. The survey tells us the volume, the per-cubic-foot rate already has the drive to South Dakota built in, and the two together give you the transportation cost. Long-distance moves start at $1,200.
The volume is what you control:
- Most South Dakota homes have basements; measure stairways for large pieces before deciding what to move.
- Leave behind Texas outdoor furniture that won't stand up to winter.
- Pack books, clothing and decor yourself, and add crew packing for glass and art.
Separate lines, if they apply, cover packing and materials, crates, stairs or elevators, a shuttle, storage in transit, added coverage and a guaranteed delivery date.
Binding estimates only
Condor writes binding estimates, so your price is set before the move. If your inventory changes after the survey, the foreman revises the estimate in writing before loading, and nothing goes on the truck until you've approved it.
Three ways to get your estimate
A Zoom survey is the usual choice: you show each room on video. We can also price the move over the phone from a detailed list of furniture and boxes, and in that case you sign a waiver of the survey so the estimate can be binding. Customers in Dallas-Fort Worth can ask for an in-person survey; that option isn't offered elsewhere.
Sturgis Week and Summer Traffic
Every August, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally brings huge crowds to the Black Hills, and roads, hotels and fuel stops from Rapid City to Spearfish get crowded for about ten days. If your move to western South Dakota falls in early August, expect slower traffic and plan around it. Summer tourist traffic to Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and the Badlands also slows two-lane roads.
Ellsworth, Colleges and Utilities
Ellsworth Air Force Base, near Box Elder just east of Rapid City, is the state's main military installation. For military households, Condor handles PPM moves, retirement moves and government-arranged shipments. Certified weight tickets come with military moves only.
South Dakota State in Brookings, the University of South Dakota in Vermillion and South Dakota Mines in Rapid City hire faculty and staff from out of state; late August is the busy time.
Xcel Energy serves Sioux Falls, Black Hills Energy serves Rapid City and the hills, and NorthWestern Energy covers parts of eastern South Dakota. Many rural homes are served by electric cooperatives.

Preparing a South Dakota Home for Delivery
Sioux Falls has grown fast, with new subdivisions on the south and west sides; many have HOA rules for truck parking and some streets aren't on maps yet. Send your consultant a map pin and the HOA's rules. In winter, keep sidewalks, steps and driveways clear, and remember that blizzards can close I-90 and I-29 for a day or more. Strong winds are common across the prairie, which affects how the crew handles large flat items like tabletops, headboards and mirrors outside the truck.
Carry anything that can't freeze, such as paint, liquids and houseplants, in your car if you move between November and March.
Choosing Where to Live in South Dakota
Most Texans moving to South Dakota land in the Sioux Falls area, where jobs in health care, banking and manufacturing are concentrated. Brandon, Harrisburg and Tea have grown into family suburbs with newer homes, while central Sioux Falls has older houses on tree-lined streets. Brookings feels like a college town, built around SDSU and a few large employers.
In the west, Rapid City is the regional hub for the Black Hills, with Box Elder growing next to Ellsworth. Spearfish draws retirees and Black Hills State staff, and Custer and Hill City attract people who want a home in the pines. Those mountain towns are lovely, but services are spread out and winter roads can be slow. Pierre, the state capital, is small and remote. If you'll be working for the state, plan for long drives to the nearest big-box store and airport connections through Sioux Falls or Rapid City.

South Dakota Vehicle Rules
South Dakota gives new residents 90 days to title and register their vehicles, which is done at the county treasurer's office in the county where you live. Driver's licenses are handled separately at state driver licensing offices. The South Dakota Department of Revenue motor vehicle pages explain the steps.
South Dakota has no income tax, but it charges sales tax and an excise tax when you title a vehicle, unless you can show tax paid elsewhere. Register to vote through your county auditor after you settle in, and set up trash and water service with the city.
