How to Pack Dishes For Moving

Packing Dishes for a Move

Whether you’re planning a residential or long-distance move in DFW, you need to make sure anything fragile, like dishes, are packed securely. Packing dishes in boxes without wrapping or cushioning them first pretty much guarantees that one or all of them will be broken by the time you arrive at your destination. You should make sure your movers know that there are fragile dishes in the boxes, but you also need to take care when packing the dishes to reduce the risk that they will become damaged. At Condor Moving Systems, we offer full-service moving help throughout Dallas-Fort Worth, including packing help, moving tips, and moving supplies like moving boxes, tape, packing paper, and bubble wrap. Supplies Needed for Packing Dishes

Before you begin packing dishes, make sure you have all of the moving supplies you need. We recommend that you get the following for packing dishes safely and securely:

  • Sturdy, heavy-duty cardboard boxes – Banker’s boxes are particularly good for packing items that are heavy and/or fragile, as they are the perfect size and sturdiness and also have hand holds.
  • Packing paper or newspaper – Packing paper or newspaper is perfect for packing dishes like plates, bowls, mugs, cups, and glasses. It offers extra protection against cracks and damage and prevents the dishes from moving around a lot in the boxes.
  • Bubble wrap – You should use bubble wrap for any dishes that are extremely fragile and/or expensive, like delicate wine glasses, fine china, glass baking dishes, or crystal.
  • Packing tape – Secure your boxes carefully with tape to ensure they don’t open in transit or the bottom doesn’t drop out while they’re being carried.
  • Labels or marker – Label each box with the word “fragile” in big letters so your movers know to treat them with care.

Preparing your Boxes for Packing Dishes

Whether you’re planning a residential move or long-distance move, you need to secure your boxes carefully when packing dishes. Reinforce all seams and edges with quality packing tape, and make sure there are no damaged areas of the box that would increase its risk of falling apart. Use small to medium sized boxes to make sure the boxes won’t be packed too heavily (which can increase their risk of breaking). Use packing paper, newspaper, or bubble wrap to fill up any empty spaces in the box so the dishes don’t move around.

How to Wrap Your Dishes to Protect Them

When packing dishes for a long-distance or local move in DFW, you need to wrap each dish individually in order to protect it. Plates, bowls, mugs, glasses, and cups can be wrapped in packing paper or newspaper. Always place the heaviest items in the bottom of the moving box. Only wrap one item per piece of packing paper, but you can cut or rip the packing paper if it’s bigger than you need for one item. Make sure the packing paper fills the interior of mugs, cups, glasses, and bowls for extra protection. Once wrapped, you can stack plates on top of each other and stack bowls or baking dishes inside of each other in each box. Don’t forget to label each side of the box as “fragile.”
