Texas to Virginia Movers

Texas to Virginia Movers

A lot of Texas to Virginia moves start with a new posting or a new contract: a job at the Pentagon or with a defense contractor in Reston, orders to Naval Station Norfolk, a faculty position in Charlottesville or Blacksburg. Dates tend to be fixed and paperwork tends to be heavy. Condor Moving Systems has moved Texas households since 2003, from locations in Fort Worth and Houston, with our own trucks and crews. We give you a binding estimate priced by the cubic foot, a guaranteed pickup date, and delivery in 1–10 business days.

Punctual, good and professional. Condor Moving System is my go-to moving guys now. Fairly priced for the level of professional moving service they provide to their customers. They were very good in communication to me and among themselves. I have had many bad experiences with multiple movers before it. Condor is the first ever company that I found nobody to complain about, which is maybe a pretty rare thing to say about relocators.

Movers did a great moving job even though it was a not smooth and it's a very long job. Best value for the money we spend. They stayed professional and were kind throughout the move process. They recognized my items and if I needed to change the things, they did it for me rapidly. Very friendly teamwork. Will surly use them again!

These movers did a best job even though it was a tough and time taking job. Best value for the money it cost. Stayed professional and were helpful throughout the day of move. Honored my goods and if I required things changed they did it for me in little time. Very coordinated teamwork. Will definitely use them again for coming movers!

Who Moves From Texas to Virginia

Government and contractor relocations. Northern Virginia, including Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Reston, Herndon, Tysons and Ashburn, is home to federal agencies, defense contractors and the data-center corridor in Loudoun County. Many of these moves follow a start date that won't change. We handle government-arranged and employer-billed relocations to Virginia.

Navy and joint-service families. Hampton Roads, which includes Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Newport News and Hampton, has Naval Station Norfolk, the largest naval base in the world, plus NAS Oceana, Joint Base Langley-Eustis and Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story.

Students and faculty. UVA in Charlottesville, Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, William & Mary in Williamsburg, James Madison in Harrisonburg, VCU in Richmond and George Mason in Fairfax.

Retirees and remote workers heading for the Blue Ridge, the Shenandoah Valley, Lake Anna or Smith Mountain Lake.

Delivery Window and Dates

Virginia is a 1–10 business day delivery state. The count starts on the first day you can receive the shipment.

  • Pickup dates are guaranteed.
  • Delivery dates can be guaranteed for an additional charge, useful when your report date or first day of work is fixed.
  • Next-day delivery is offered only on a dedicated truck for destinations within about an 8-hour drive. Bristol, the closest Virginia city to Texas, is still about 17 hours by car from Dallas, so next-day isn't available on this route.

The Drive to Virginia

From Dallas and Fort Worth, most trucks take I-30 to Little Rock and I-40 east through Memphis and Nashville to Knoxville, then I-81 north into Virginia at Bristol. I-81 runs up the western side of the state past Roanoke and Harrisonburg; I-64 crosses east to Charlottesville, Richmond and Hampton Roads, and I-66 heads into Northern Virginia. From Houston, the truck may run I-10 and I-59 northeast toward I-81, or go by way of Atlanta and Charlotte to I-85 and I-95.

Northern Virginia Logistics

Condos and apartment towers

Rosslyn, Crystal City, Ballston, Tysons and Reston Town Center are dense with high-rise buildings. Expect to provide a certificate of insurance, book a freight elevator and stay inside a set move window, often weekdays only. Send us the building's requirements and we'll have the COI issued before the truck leaves Texas.

Old Town and older neighborhoods

Old Town Alexandria and parts of Arlington have narrow streets, brick sidewalks, rowhouses and limited curb space. Some streets need advance parking arrangements through the city or county. Where a full-size semi can't get access, a smaller shuttle truck finishes the trip. Shuttle service is charged in addition to your estimate and starts at $450.

Express Lanes are off limits

Trucks with more than two axles aren't allowed in the I-495, I-95 and I-395 Express Lanes. Our drivers use the regular lanes on the Beltway and I-95, so plan for rush-hour traffic; a delivery that starts mid-morning often goes more smoothly.

HOAs in Loudoun and Prince William

Ashburn, Brambleton, South Riding, Gainesville and Bristow are full of HOA communities. Ask about truck parking, moving hours and any gate lists, and pass them to your consultant.

Hampton Roads: Water, Tunnels and Tides

Much of Hampton Roads is linked by bridge-tunnels. The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (I-64) is being widened, with completion expected in 2027, so work zones and lane shifts are part of the drive for now. Tunnels also restrict hazardous materials. Propane, gasoline and other flammables can't ride on a moving truck anyway; see the non-allowables list.

Low-lying parts of Norfolk and Virginia Beach see tidal and storm flooding, especially during nor'easters and during hurricane season (June 1 to November 30). If your delivery is near the water in the fall, leave a little room in your schedule.

Richmond, the Valley and Southwest Virginia

Richmond neighborhoods like the Fan, Museum District and Church Hill have rowhouses with front stoops and narrow streets; suburbs such as Short Pump, Midlothian and Glen Allen are mostly single-family homes. Fort Lee, south of Richmond near Petersburg, took back that name in 2025 after a period as Fort Gregg-Adams.

The I-81 corridor through Bristol, Abingdon, Roanoke, Lexington, Staunton and Harrisonburg carries heavy truck traffic, and winter storms can slow it down for a day. Blue Ridge homes may have long gravel drives and steep grades; photos help us plan.

Military and Federal Moves

Fort Belvoir, the Pentagon, Marine Corps Base Quantico, Naval Station Norfolk, NAS Oceana, Joint Base Langley-Eustis and Fort Lee all require gate access arranged in advance with crew and truck details. Weight tickets are required only for military moves; if yours needs them, we can provide them. Our military work includes PPM moves (you set up the move and are reimbursed by the government), retiree moves and shipments arranged by the government.

How We Price a Virginia Move

We price every long-distance move by cubic footage. The per-cubic-foot rate already covers the trip from Texas, so your estimate has no separate distance charge. Long-distance moves start at $1,200; a full household to Virginia will be more, and the survey determines the exact amount.

Condor estimates are binding. If your inventory changes before load day, the foreman puts the revised estimate in writing and you approve it before loading begins. Binding is the only type of estimate we give, so your employer or agency gets the same written estimate you do.

Your total depends on:

  • The cubic feet you're shipping
  • Any packing add-on, materials and crates
  • Elevators, stairs, stoops and long carries
  • Pianos, safes and large furniture
  • Storage in transit if your housing isn't ready
  • A guaranteed delivery date

To keep it lower:

  • Downsize before the survey if you're moving into a smaller NoVA condo
  • Do your own packing, or choose a partial pack
  • Avoid the busiest summer weeks, when military and school-year moves peak

Your Quote Options

  1. Zoom video survey (most popular). Show a consultant your home over video, room by room.
  2. Phone quote. Works when you can give us an accurate item list and box count. For a binding phone quote with no video or in-person survey, you sign a written waiver of the survey.
  3. In-person survey. Only in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Standard on Every Move, and What Costs Extra

Standard:

  • Basic furniture disassembly and reassembly, every move
  • Pad wrapping for furniture
  • Numbered tags and an inventory you sign in Texas and in Virginia
  • Unloading into the rooms you choose
  • One consultant for the whole move
  • Binding written estimate
  • Released value protection, the federal minimum coverage, at no added cost. It pays 60 cents per pound per article and is moving coverage, not insurance. Full value replacement is available through Baker International; Condor doesn't sell it in-house. See the coverage options.

Extra:

  • Packing, always an add-on: a full pack, or a partial pack for dishes, clothes, decorations, or the garage and attic
  • Boxes and materials
  • Crating
  • Storage in transit
  • Guaranteed delivery date

Federal Protections and Claims

A move from Texas to Virginia crosses state lines, so it's regulated by the FMCSA. Condor holds USDOT 1126171 and MC-458180, and we'll give you the federal booklet Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move. You have 9 months from delivery to file a written claim for loss or damage. We help with your claim after the move; start at file a claim.

New-Resident Deadlines in Virginia

You can drive on your Texas license for 60 days after moving, then you need a Virginia license. Vehicles have to be titled and registered within 30 days, and you'll need a Virginia safety inspection and, in some localities including Northern Virginia, an emissions inspection.

Pickup and Delivery Areas

Texas pickups: Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Killeen, El Paso and anywhere else in Texas.

Virginia deliveries: Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Reston, Herndon, Vienna, McLean, Ashburn, Leesburg, Manassas, Woodbridge, Stafford, Fredericksburg, Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield, Petersburg, Williamsburg, Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, Staunton, Lynchburg, Roanoke, Blacksburg and Bristol.

We also pick up anywhere in Virginia for moves back to Texas. Heading just south instead? See Texas to North Carolina movers.

Relocation Paperwork for Employer-Paid Moves

Many Virginia moves are paid for, at least in part, by an employer, an agency or a relocation company. Their reimbursement rules are often strict about documents. Here is what to keep.

  • Your binding estimate. Every Condor estimate is binding; it is the only type we give. Ask for it at the quote stage so it's in your file from the start.
  • Any written revision. If your inventory changes before load day, the foreman writes the revised estimate and you sign it before loading. Keep that signed copy.
  • The inventory. You sign the tagged inventory at pickup in Texas and again at delivery in Virginia. Note any exceptions on the sheet before you sign.
  • The bill of lading. This is your contract for the move. Keep it with your estimate.
  • Add-on paperwork. Packing, crating, storage in transit and a guaranteed delivery date each appear on your estimate. Some policies cover these and some don't, so check before you choose them.
  • Claims records. If something is lost or damaged, note it, photograph it and start a claim. You have 9 months from delivery, and we help you through it.

Timing a move around a start date

Federal and contractor start dates in Northern Virginia, and report dates in Hampton Roads, rarely move. Work backward from the date:

  1. Book your Zoom survey as soon as you have an offer or orders.
  2. Choose your pickup date; it's guaranteed.
  3. Decide whether you need a guaranteed delivery date (additional charge) or storage in transit while you look for housing.
  4. If you're renting in NoVA, confirm the building's move-in days early. Many buildings allow moves only on weekdays.

Security clearance holders and home offices

If you work from home with secure equipment issued by your employer, follow your employer's rules for transporting it. Government-issued equipment generally shouldn't go on a household moving truck; ask your security officer.

Texas to Virginia Moving FAQ

Can you meet a fixed start date in Northern Virginia?

Your pickup date is guaranteed, and a guaranteed delivery date is available for an additional charge. Tell us your start date when you request a quote.

Will the truck use the Express Lanes on the Beltway?

No. Trucks with more than two axles aren't allowed in the I-495, I-95 and I-395 Express Lanes, so we use the regular lanes.

My Arlington building needs a COI. How does that work?

Send us the building's sample certificate and requirements. We issue it before the truck leaves Texas and schedule delivery in your elevator window.

Is Norfolk priced higher than Richmond because it's farther?

There's no distance line. The price is per cubic foot, and that rate includes the trip.

Does my shipment need a truck-scale ticket?

Only military moves require weight tickets, and we provide them for those moves.

What kind of estimate will my employer get?

A binding estimate. Binding is the only type of estimate Condor gives, and any change is approved by you in writing before loading.

Is packing part of the move?

No, packing is an add-on. Furniture disassembly and reassembly is included.

How long can I drive on my Texas license in Virginia?

60 days. Your car must be titled and registered within 30 days.
