Planning Around Kansas Conditions
Severe weather from spring into summer
Kansas sees frequent tornadoes and large hail, mostly in spring and early summer. Pick a move date with some flexibility on either side. If a warning is issued along the route or at the Kansas address, loading or unloading waits until it clears. Winter brings ice storms and drifting snow on I-70 and the Flint Hills stretch of the turnpike. Those can close roads for a day or more.
Kansas Turnpike tolls
The Kansas Turnpike went fully cashless on July 1, 2024, so there are no toll booths. If you drive your own car north on I-35 without a K-TAG or compatible transponder, a bill comes in the mail through DriveKS.
Wheat harvest and rural roads
In central and western Kansas, the wheat harvest usually runs from June into July. Combines and grain trucks crowd two-lane roads near towns like Hutchinson, Salina and Dodge City in those weeks. Fort Riley, Fort Leavenworth and McConnell AFB
Kansas has three major military installations. Fort Riley sits between Junction City and Manhattan, Fort Leavenworth is just north of Kansas City, and McConnell Air Force Base is in southeast Wichita. Moves onto post need gate access set up ahead of time, with crew names, IDs and truck details. Moves timed to a report date have little slack. Let us know your installation and report date on the quote form. Military moves are the one case where weight tickets come into play: if your move needs them, we can provide them. No other Kansas move requires truck weighing. Condor handles PPM moves, where the service member arranges the move and the government reimburses it, along with retiree moves and government-arranged shipments.
The Kansas City metro sits on a state line
State Line Road splits the Kansas City metro. Overland Park, Olathe, Lenexa, Shawnee, Leawood and Kansas City, Kansas are on the Kansas side, and Kansas City, Missouri, Independence and Lee's Summit are on the Missouri side. Lawrence, Manhattan and Wichita State move weeks
Late July and August are peak moving weeks in Lawrence (University of Kansas) and Manhattan (Kansas State University), and May brings a second rush. Wichita State's campus area sees a smaller version of the same thing. Parking near campus apartments fills fast, so book those dates well ahead.
After you arrive: Kansas license and registration
New Kansas residents generally have 90 days to get a Kansas driver's license and register their vehicles. A car titled in Texas needs a Kansas Highway Patrol VIN inspection before the county treasurer will register it. Active-duty service members and full-time nonresident students are generally exempt. Does a move from Texas to Kansas fall under federal rules?
