Texas to North Carolina Movers

Texas to North Carolina Movers

Charlotte is about a thousand miles from Dallas, which makes North Carolina one of the nearer East Coast states for a Texas household. The state still stretches more than 500 miles from the Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks, and a move to Asheville is a different job from a move to a Cary subdivision or a Wilmington beach house. Condor Moving Systems has been moving Texans since 2003 from our Fort Worth and Houston locations. We use our own trucks and our own crews, and we give you a binding estimate priced by the cubic foot before load day.

Punctual, good and professional. Condor Moving System is my go-to moving guys now. Fairly priced for the level of professional moving service they provide to their customers. They were very good in communication to me and among themselves. I have had many bad experiences with multiple movers before it. Condor is the first ever company that I found nobody to complain about, which is maybe a pretty rare thing to say about relocators.

Movers did a great moving job even though it was a not smooth and it's a very long job. Best value for the money we spend. They stayed professional and were kind throughout the move process. They recognized my items and if I needed to change the things, they did it for me rapidly. Very friendly teamwork. Will surly use them again!

These movers did a best job even though it was a tough and time taking job. Best value for the money it cost. Stayed professional and were helpful throughout the day of move. Honored my goods and if I required things changed they did it for me in little time. Very coordinated teamwork. Will definitely use them again for coming movers!

North Carolina, Region by Region

The Mountains. Asheville, Boone, Hendersonville and the High Country sit along I-26 and I-40 in the Blue Ridge. Expect winding roads, steep driveways and homes set on slopes. Where a full-size semi can't get access, a shuttle truck finishes the trip. Shuttle service is charged in addition to your estimate and starts at $450.

Charlotte and the southern Piedmont. Uptown Charlotte towers, South End apartments and suburbs such as Ballantyne, Huntersville, Matthews, Mooresville and Fort Mill across the South Carolina line. I-77, I-85 and the I-485 loop carry most of the traffic.

The Triad. Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point, along I-40 and I-85.

The Triangle. Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary, Apex, Morrisville and Wake Forest, one of the fastest-growing regions in the country, with many new subdivisions and townhome communities.

The Sandhills. Fayetteville, Fort Bragg, Southern Pines and Pinehurst.

The Coast. Wilmington, Jacksonville and Camp Lejeune, New Bern, Morehead City and the Outer Banks.

How Long Delivery Takes

North Carolina is on our 1–10 business day delivery schedule, counted from the first day you can receive the shipment.

Next-day delivery is only offered on a dedicated truck when the destination is within about an 8-hour drive. The closest North Carolina city, Asheville, is still around 17 to 18 hours by car from Dallas, so next-day isn't available here.

Your pickup date is guaranteed. A guaranteed delivery date can be added for an additional charge, which helps when a closing date or school start can't move.

Routes From Texas

Most trucks from Dallas and Fort Worth head east on I-20 through Shreveport, Jackson, Birmingham and Atlanta, then north on I-85 to Charlotte, the Triad and the Triangle. Houston loads usually run I-10 to Baton Rouge and I-12 and I-59 toward Birmingham before joining I-20. Asheville and the mountains are often reached from Knoxville on I-40.

Rounded, from OpenStreetMap routing between city centers, without stops. A loaded truck takes longer and its driver follows federal hours-of-service rules.

I-40 through the Pigeon River Gorge

Tropical Storm Helene washed out sections of I-40 near the Tennessee line in September 2024. As of October 2026 the road is open but down to one lane in each direction at 35 mph, with narrow lanes and few shoulders. NCDOT expects all four lanes back by late 2029. Expect slower trips on that stretch, and our drivers may choose another route into the mountains.

Tolls

The Triangle Expressway (NC 540) around western Wake County and the I-77 express lanes north of Charlotte are tolled. If you'll drive your car on either, an NC Quick Pass or a compatible transponder saves you a mailed bill.

Weather and Timing

Hurricane season

Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with the most activity from mid-August through October. Wilmington, the Outer Banks and Jacksonville can see evacuations and closed bridges. Inland, Helene showed that the mountains are vulnerable too. If you're moving to the coast in the fall, plan a flexible day on each end and keep watch on forecasts in the week before your delivery.

Ice in the Piedmont

Charlotte, the Triad and the Triangle don't get much snow, but freezing rain a few times a winter can coat roads and down trees. A one-day ice event can shift a delivery.

Campus calendars

UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke, NC State, UNC Charlotte, Appalachian State, East Carolina and Wake Forest all move students in during mid-to-late August. Rentals near those campuses turn over at the same time.

Subdivisions, Townhomes and Towers

Much of the new housing around Charlotte and the Triangle is in HOA communities. Some limit when moving trucks can park, ask for notice, or don't allow trucks on private lanes. Ask your HOA for its rules as soon as you have a contract and send them to your consultant.

Townhome rows in Cary, Morrisville and South End often have three stories with the living area on the middle floor, so expect the crew to carry furniture up a flight of stairs from the garage. Uptown Charlotte and downtown Raleigh apartment towers usually require a certificate of insurance and a booked freight elevator. We issue the COI before the truck leaves Texas.

Military Moves

North Carolina has one of the largest military populations in the country. Fort Bragg (renamed from Fort Liberty in 2025), Camp Lejeune, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro and Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point all require gate access arranged before the truck arrives. Weight tickets are required only for military moves; for those, we can provide them. Condor handles PPM moves, where the service member arranges the move and the government reimburses it, along with retiree moves and government-arranged shipments.

Pricing Your North Carolina Move

Cubic feet, not distance. Every long-distance move is priced on the cubic footage of your shipment. The rate already includes the trip to North Carolina, so there is no separate charge for the distance.

Starting point. Long-distance moves with Condor start at $1,200. A full household going to North Carolina will be higher, and your inventory sets the number.

Binding. Your estimate is binding. If your list changes before load day, the foreman writes a revision and you approve it before anything goes on the truck. A not-to-exceed estimate is available if you need one.

What affects your total:

  • How many cubic feet you send
  • A full or partial packing add-on, plus cartons and crates
  • Stairs (including those three-story townhomes), elevators and long carries
  • Pianos, safes and other heavy pieces
  • Storage in transit
  • A guaranteed delivery date

To lower it:

  • Sell or donate what you won't use before the survey
  • Pack your own boxes or choose a partial pack
  • Skip the late-August campus weeks and the week around July 4 if you can

Get a Quote Your Way

  1. Video survey on Zoom. Our most popular option. A consultant tours your Texas home with you on video and builds your inventory.
  2. Phone quote. Works when you can give an accurate furniture list and box count. For a binding phone quote with no video or in-person survey, you sign a written waiver of the survey.
  3. In-home survey. Available only in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Before the call, you can list your rooms with our moving inventory.

Included, and Not Included

Included on every move: basic furniture disassembly at pickup and reassembly at delivery, pads on every piece of furniture, a numbered tag on each item with an inventory you sign at both ends, placement in the rooms you choose, and one consultant from start to finish. Released value protection, the federal minimum coverage, is included at no extra charge. It pays 60 cents per pound per article and is moving coverage, not insurance. Full value replacement is available through Baker International; Condor doesn't sell it in-house. Compare the options on our coverage page.

Not included: packing. Our crew can pack the whole house or just part of it, such as the kitchen dishes, the closets, the holiday decorations, or the garage and attic. It's always an add-on, priced on its own line.

Federal Protections and Claims

A move from Texas to North Carolina is interstate, so it falls under FMCSA rules. Condor operates under USDOT 1126171 and MC-458180. You'll receive the federal booklet Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move, and you have 9 months from delivery to file a written claim for loss or damage. We support you through the claim after the move; start at file a claim.

After You Land in North Carolina

New residents have 60 days to get a North Carolina driver license and to title and register a vehicle. Get the license first at an NCDMV driver license office, then title and register at a license plate agency with proof of North Carolina insurance.

A Move Plan That Allows for Weather

North Carolina moves often happen in the same months as hurricane season, so build a little slack into your plan.

When you book

  • Choose your pickup date. Pickup dates are guaranteed.
  • If your closing, lease start or school start can't move, ask for a guaranteed delivery date (an additional charge).
  • For a coastal address between August and October, pick a delivery target that leaves a day or two of room in case a storm crosses the route.

Two to three weeks before

  • Send us your HOA's rules on truck parking and move hours.
  • For a townhome, tell us which pieces go to the third floor.
  • For a mountain home, send photos of the driveway, the turnaround and the front steps.

The week of the move

  • Keep an eye on forecasts for the coast or the mountains. If a storm is coming, call your consultant early so we can talk about timing.
  • Fill a bin with documents, medications, chargers and a first-night kit, and carry it yourself.
  • Charge a power bank. A storm can knock out power at either end.

Delivery day

  • Walk the crew through which room each piece goes in. Room labels on boxes help.
  • Check tags against your inventory as items come off the truck.

Mountain moves: steep drives and switchbacks

Homes in Asheville, Boone, Blowing Rock and Banner Elk are often on steep, winding roads with tight switchbacks, and some driveways are gravel or have no room to turn a truck around. In winter, ice on shaded roads can make a driveway impassable even when the main highway is clear. Photos and a map pin help us plan the right approach. If a shuttle truck is needed, it's charged in addition to your estimate.

Coastal moves: elevated homes and barrier islands

Beach homes in Wrightsville Beach, Topsail, Emerald Isle and the Outer Banks are often built on pilings with long stairs up to the main floor, and some barrier-island roads are narrow. Bridges can close during storms. Tell us about the stairs and the street during the survey.

Texas to North Carolina Moving FAQ

How far is Charlotte from Dallas?

About 1,025 driving miles, roughly 19 hours by car. Raleigh is about 1,210 miles from Dallas.

Is North Carolina a 1–10 or 1–21 day state?

1–10 business days, counted from the first day you can receive the shipment.

Does hurricane season affect my move to Wilmington or the Outer Banks?

It can. If a storm threatens the coast, delivery waits until roads and bridges are safe. A flexible day on each side of your date helps in late summer and fall.

My new home is in a Cary HOA. What should I send you?

Any HOA rules about moving hours, truck parking and private streets. We plan the delivery around them.

Is there a separate charge for the distance?

No. We price by cubic foot, and that rate already covers the trip.

Do I need weight tickets?

Only on a military move. We can provide them when a military move requires them.

Can I get a guaranteed delivery date?

Yes, for an additional charge. Your pickup date is guaranteed at no extra cost.

When do I need a North Carolina license?

Within 60 days of moving. Get the license first, then title and register your car.
