Texas to New York Movers
New York is really two moves. A Brooklyn walk-up, a Manhattan co-op or a Queens rental is ruled by building managers, elevator bookings and city truck rules. A house outside Rochester, Ithaca or Albany is ruled by the Thruway, the school calendar and lake-effect snow. Condor Moving Systems has moved Texas households since 2003, from our locations in Fort Worth and Houston, with our own trucks and our own crews. We plan your New York delivery around whichever of those two worlds you are moving into, and you get the price in writing before anything is loaded.

Punctual, good and professional. Condor Moving System is my go-to moving guys now. Fairly priced for the level of professional moving service they provide to their customers. They were very good in communication to me and among themselves. I have had many bad experiences with multiple movers before it. Condor is the first ever company that I found nobody to complain about, which is maybe a pretty rare thing to say about relocators.Thomas C Davison
Movers did a great moving job even though it was a not smooth and it's a very long job. Best value for the money we spend. They stayed professional and were kind throughout the move process. They recognized my items and if I needed to change the things, they did it for me rapidly. Very friendly teamwork. Will surly use them again!Denis Tanney
These movers did a best job even though it was a tough and time taking job. Best value for the money it cost. Stayed professional and were helpful throughout the day of move. Honored my goods and if I required things changed they did it for me in little time. Very coordinated teamwork. Will definitely use them again for coming movers!Marks Josephine
Two New Yorks, Two Delivery Windows
Our transit times are counted in business days, starting from the first day you can receive the shipment at your New York address.
| Where you're moving | Delivery window |
|---|---|
| New York City area | 1–10 business days |
| Upstate New York | 1–21 business days |
The longer Upstate window reflects how deliveries are routed across a large, spread-out region. The New York City area means Manhattan and everything surrounding it.
Next-day delivery is something we offer only on a dedicated truck when the destination is within about an 8-hour drive. Every New York address is more than a full day of driving from Texas, so it doesn't apply on this lane.
Two dates you can lock down:
- Pickup date: we guarantee it.
- Delivery date: a guaranteed delivery date is available for an additional charge. Ask for it on your quote if a lease start, a closing or a first day at work leaves no room.
What Comes With Every Condor Move to New York
- Basic furniture disassembly at your Texas home and reassembly in New York, on every move
- Blanket padding on each furniture piece before it goes on the truck
- Numbered tags on every item, checked against an inventory you sign in Texas and again at delivery
- Placement of furniture and cartons in the rooms you choose
- One consultant handling your file from the first call through delivery
- A binding written estimate
- Released value protection, the federal minimum coverage, at no extra charge. It pays 60 cents per pound per article and is moving coverage, not insurance, so read the moving coverage options before you decide. Full value replacement is available through Baker International; Condor doesn't sell it in-house.
Packing is never bundled into the price. If you want help, our crew can pack everything (full pack) or just the rooms you pick (partial pack): kitchen dishes, closets of clothes, holiday decorations, and whatever is in the garage and attic. It is an add-on, quoted as its own line.
Getting a Truck Into the City
Trailer length and the five boroughs
New York City does not allow 53-foot trailers to make pickups or deliveries in any of the five boroughs; they are limited to a few interstate segments. A long-haul move into Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx or Staten Island is planned with equipment that is legal on city streets. When a semi-truck can't get access, your shipment moves to a smaller shuttle truck for the last leg. Shuttle service is charged in addition to your estimate and starts at $450.
Parkways are off limits
Commercial vehicles are barred from New York's parkways, including the Belt, the Grand Central, the Hutchinson River and the Taconic. Our drivers route on truck-legal expressways, which is one reason a delivery to a parkway-lined suburb can take longer than the map suggests.
Congestion pricing below 60th Street
Since January 5, 2025, vehicles entering Manhattan's Congestion Relief Zone, at or below 60th Street, pay a toll. Trucks are charged for every entry, and the overnight rate is 75% lower than the peak rate. If your building lets us deliver early in the morning, tell your consultant.
Co-ops, condos and rental buildings
Most managed buildings in the city want three things before the truck arrives:
- A certificate of insurance (COI) naming the building and its management company exactly as they specify. Send us the building's sample COI and we'll have it issued before the truck leaves Texas.
- A reserved freight elevator window, often on weekdays only and within set hours.
- A move-in deposit or approval from the board or management office.
Walk-ups don't have elevator rules, but four and five flights of stairs take time. Mention the floor and whether there is an elevator when you book your survey so the crew size is right.
Parking on the block
Curb space in Brooklyn, Queens and upper Manhattan is tight, and alternate-side rules change by block. Let us know the street layout, any loading zone in front of the building, and whether the delivery side has a fire hydrant or bus stop.
Upstate: Thruway, Snow and College Towns
The Thruway and I-81
Most Upstate deliveries come north on I-81 through Pennsylvania to Binghamton and Syracuse, or east along the New York State Thruway (I-90) toward Rochester, Syracuse, Utica and Albany. The Thruway is fully cashless; toll bills are mailed if you drive your own car without E-ZPass.
Lake-effect snow
Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and the Tug Hill area near Watertown get lake-effect snow bands from late fall through winter. A single band can drop more than a foot in hours and close the Thruway for a stretch. If you're moving between November and March, build a spare day into your plans on either side.
College move-in weeks
Cornell in Ithaca, Syracuse University, the University of Rochester, the University at Buffalo, Binghamton University and the University at Albany all fill nearby streets with move-in traffic in late August. Off-campus leases often turn over at the same time. If your dates are flexible, avoid those weeks in a college town.
Fort Drum and West Point
Fort Drum, home of the 10th Mountain Division, is just outside Watertown in the North Country, and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point is on the Hudson. Both require gate access arranged ahead of time with crew names, IDs and truck information. Weight tickets are only required on military moves; if your military move needs them, we can provide them. Condor handles PPM moves, where the service member arranges the move and the government reimburses it, along with retiree moves and government-arranged shipments.
How We Price a Texas to New York Move
Every long-distance move is priced by the cubic feet your shipment takes up on the truck. The rate already covers the trip from Texas to New York, so there is no separate distance charge on your estimate. Long-distance moves with Condor start at $1,200; a Texas to New York household will be well above that, and the exact number comes from your inventory.
Your estimate is binding. If what you're moving changes before load day, the foreman writes up a revision and you approve it before anything is loaded. If your employer or relocation package requires a not-to-exceed estimate, we can provide one.
What raises or lowers the number
- Total cubic feet, which is mostly furniture count and number of boxes
- The packing add-on, full or partial, and any cartons or crates you order
- Stair carries, long walks from the truck to the door, and elevator buildings
- Pianos, safes and very large pieces
- Storage in transit if your apartment or closing isn't ready
- A guaranteed delivery date, if you choose one
Ways to keep it lower
- Sell or donate the pieces that won't fit a smaller New York apartment before your survey. City floor plans are often half the size of a Texas house.
- Measure your sofa, dresser and bed frame against the new building's doors, stairwells and elevator cab.
- Pack your own boxes, or choose a partial pack for the kitchen only.
- Leave early-August and holiday-weekend dates to others if you can.
How to Get Your New York Quote
- Zoom or video survey (most popular). Walk a consultant through your Texas home on your phone. It takes about as long as a tour and gives the most accurate inventory without anyone coming over.
- Phone quote. If you can give an accurate list of furniture and a realistic box count, we can quote by phone. For a binding phone quote with no video or in-person survey, you sign a written waiver of the survey.
- In-person survey. Available only in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
You can start a room-by-room list with our online moving inventory before the call.
Routes and Driving Distances
From North Texas the usual route runs east on I-30 to Little Rock, then I-40 to Knoxville and I-81 up the Shenandoah Valley into Pennsylvania. From there it's I-78 toward New York City, or I-81 straight north to Binghamton and Syracuse. From Houston the truck often heads east on I-10 and I-12 before picking up I-59 to I-81.
| From | To | Approx. driving miles | Approx. drive time by car |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dallas | Manhattan | 1,550 | 28 hrs |
| Fort Worth | Brooklyn | 1,585 | 29 hrs |
| Fort Worth | Buffalo | 1,400 | 25½ hrs |
| Fort Worth | Rochester | 1,470 | 27 hrs |
| Fort Worth | Syracuse | 1,545 | 28½ hrs |
| Fort Worth | Ithaca | 1,540 | 28½ hrs |
| Fort Worth | Albany | 1,685 | 31 hrs |
| Fort Worth | Fort Drum | 1,620 | 30 hrs |
| Houston | Queens | 1,640 | 30½ hrs |
| Houston | Buffalo | 1,485 | 27½ hrs |
| Austin | Manhattan | 1,745 | 31½ hrs |
| San Antonio | Manhattan | 1,825 | 33 hrs |
Distances are rounded, from OpenStreetMap routing between city centers, without rest stops. A loaded truck runs slower than a car and the driver must follow federal hours-of-service limits.
Your Rights on a Move to New York
A move from Texas to New York is interstate, so it falls under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. We operate under USDOT 1126171 and MC-458180. Before your move you'll receive the federal booklet Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move. If something arrives damaged, you have 9 months from delivery to file a written claim, and we help you through it after the move. Start at our file a claim page.
Some things can't ride on the truck, including paint, propane, gasoline and ammunition. See the non-allowables list.
Your First 30 Days in New York
New York gives new residents 30 days to exchange an out-of-state driver license and 30 days to register a vehicle. You'll need New York auto insurance before you can register; the DMV doesn't accept out-of-state coverage for a New York plate. Students living in New York only while in school generally don't have to exchange their licenses.

An Eight-Week Plan for a New York Delivery
New York moves go smoothly when the building paperwork is finished before the truck is loaded. Here is the order we suggest.
Eight weeks out. Ask your new building's management office or managing agent for its move-in packet. It usually lists permitted move days and hours, the certificate of insurance wording, elevator rules and any deposit. If you're buying into a co-op, ask when board approval is expected, because a move date can't be booked until it's final.
Six weeks out. Do your Zoom survey with us. Measure the new apartment if you can, or get a floor plan, and decide what stays in Texas. A sectional that fit a Plano living room may not make the turn in a prewar hallway.
Four weeks out. Approve your binding estimate and choose your pickup date. Decide whether you need a guaranteed delivery date and whether you want the packing add-on. Send us the building's COI sample so we can have it issued.
Two weeks out. Confirm the elevator reservation and the building's move window. For a walk-up, tell us the floor and the stair layout again so the crew plan is right. Start using up pantry items and cleaning supplies that can't ride on the truck.
Moving week. Keep medications, documents, jewelry, laptops and a few days of clothes with you, not on the truck. Leave the Texas house ready to load: beds stripped, drawers emptied of anything that spills, and kids' and pets' things set aside.
Delivery day. Be at the building early, with your lease or closing documents and a contact number for the super or doorman. We check each tag against your inventory as items come off the truck.
Upstate homes need their own checklist
Houses in the Finger Lakes, the Capital Region or Western New York raise different questions: Is the driveway steep or unpaved? Will it be plowed? Is there a basement entrance? Send us photos of the front of the house and the driveway, especially for a winter delivery.

Texas to New York Moving FAQ
Why does Upstate New York take longer than New York City?
Upstate deliveries are spread across a wide region, so we quote them a 1–21 business day window. NYC-area deliveries are 1–10 business days. Both are counted from the first day you can receive the shipment.
Can you get my things into a Manhattan co-op?
Yes. Send us the building's move rules and sample certificate of insurance as soon as you have them. We issue the COI before the truck leaves Texas, and we schedule delivery inside the freight elevator window the building gives you.
Will a full-size tractor-trailer park on my street in Brooklyn?
No. City rules keep 53-foot trailers out of the boroughs for pickups and deliveries. Your move is planned with street-legal equipment, and your estimate shows any extra handling.
Is there a separate charge for the distance to New York?
No. The price per cubic foot already includes the trip. What you pay depends on how much you send and the services you add.
Does my move need a truck-scale ticket?
No. Weight tickets are only needed on military moves, and we provide them when a military move calls for them.
Can I guarantee my delivery date into New York?
Pickup dates are guaranteed. A guaranteed delivery date is available for an additional charge.
Can I get a quote without anyone coming to my house?
Yes. Most customers use a Zoom video survey. A phone quote also works if you can give us an accurate furniture list and box count.
What should I do about my car and license after moving to New York?
You have 30 days to exchange your license and 30 days to register your car, and you'll need New York insurance first.
