Moving Out of State? Here’s a Checklist

If you’re planning to move to a new state, you’ve probably realized that you have a million things to do to prepare and actually execute the move. In order to help you keep your move as trouble free as possible, here are a few things you’ll need to do, both before the move and after. This list isn’t all inclusive but should help you get started.

Moving

Before the Move

  • Start a moving file-stay organized by setting up a moving file. Keeping any plans, documents, or moving quotes in one place will help you to stay on top of all the details.
  • Research your new location-visit the new city or research it on the internet. If you have any contacts in the new city, let them advise you on such things as  the most desirable neighborhoods, best schools, or commute times to your new job.
  • Get organized and trim down-take some time to sell or donate anything you don’t think you’ll need in your new location. This will not only help you to pack only the things you’ll need, but you’ll also save on the cost of your move.
  • Set up a budget-get quotes from two or three moving companies so that you’ll have a good idea of how much the move is going to cost. Consider alternatives to a traditional moving company by looking at using pods that you would pack yourself. Also take a look at the option of packing and moving yourself in a rental truck.
  • Cancel or transfer any services you won’t use in the new city-this can include items like utilities, subscriptions, or health club memberships. Make sure the post office, your friends, and your neighbors are all notified of your new address.

After the Move

  • Find the services you’ll need in your new location-find new doctors for yourselves, your kids, and your pets. Locate the nearest grocery, drug store, health club, or place of worship.
  • Change your driver’s license-each state has their own regulations in this regard, but there’ll be a deadline for you to change it.
  • Register to vote-in many states, this is automatic when you change your driver’s license, but don’t leave it to chance.
  • Insurance-you’ll need new car insurance as well as homeowner’s or renter’s coverage.
