7 Ways to Make Your Office Move a Blast!

Change makes people nervous, and a move can create anxiety in your employees.  They may be worried that they won’t know the new neighborhood, the quickest way to get there, or where to park when they arrive. Here are some ways to make the move more palatable form your staff, and even make a fun event of it.

  • Inform your Employees

No one likes to be left in the dark. Once you’ve decided to move and found a new space, tell your employees.  Tell them about the new amenities the new place has.  Maybe there are things your old space doesn’t have like a gym, a cafeteria, a childcare facility. Offer them a virtual tour of the new office or organize a field trip to the new location.

  • Hold a Lunch & Learn
office job

Your employees might be worried about leaving familiar things at your current location. Where are they going to get that favorite coffee or sandwich they’ve grown fond of at the restaurant around the corner? Bring in takeout from restaurants in the new neighborhood.  Get them excited about discovering new restaurants and new morning rituals.

  • Who Doesn’t Like Swag?

Order some company swag with the new address.  Gym bags-sweatshirts-keychains-coffee mugs! If you don’t have time to order custom items, give each employee a gift certificate to a local office supply store for them to spruce up their new cubicles.

  • Get Your Staff Involved

Talk to your folks and ask them for suggestions to make the new space fun and exciting. Set up committees to decide on things like color schemes, types of furnishings, brand of coffee in the kitchen, etc. If your staff is involved in some of the smaller decisions, they’ll be happier with the move in general.

  • Get Competitive

Have your teams compete for small prizes.  Competitions can be for who gets packed or unpacked the fastest. Who shredded the most documents? Which team offered the best suggestions for making the move go more smoothly?

  • Host a Happy Hour

Host an after-hours happy hour in the new office. Give your people a chance to move around, find out where their friends are sitting, and celebrate the success of the move. You can also include clients or vendors.  Pride of ownership is contagious, and your employees will soon feel right at home.

  • Don’t Try to Move Yourselves!

Moving is serious business and you need professionals to handle the job.  Whether your staff is small or large, trust the movers you’ve hired to get all the equipment, furniture, and documents over to the new space.
