Moving Tips

Moving your computer

Before moving your PC there are certain procedures to follow, which will protect your system from mechanical failure or damage due to normal physical shock which occurs during transport. If the following steps are taken prior to moving your computer, your system will arrive safely at destination.

Disk Drive Preparation

Make backup copies of your data files and store them together with the original program disks in a sturdy container, preferably a fireproof lockbox. Remove any diskettes from the drive and insert the cardboard disk into the driver and close the driver door.

Hard disk preparation

To avoid shock to your hard disk, the recording heads should be “parked” before transport. When automatic “park and lock” systems are powered down the disk automatically retracts the recording heads from the data area into a safety zone. Other PC systems require the running of a program to activate the part procedure. IBM and most hard-disk clones include the program SHIPDISK.EXE that parts the heads. The program is usually located on the diagnostic diskette that came with the computer. You can run the program from the menu of the diagnostic diskette, or you can copy SHIPDISK.EXE to your hard disk and run it. When SHIPDISK is invoked the red light of the disk goes on and off, indicating that the hard disk is parked. The hard disk is unparked when the computer is turned back on. Once your drives are secure, you should turn OFF the system power and remove all cables from the back of the unit.

Packing /shipping preparation

The original packing box your system came in is the best choice; the rigid Styrofoam packing material will hold the system securely in place. In the event you’re original packing box is not available, your carrier will provide a sturdy packing container and materials.

If you are moving a printer
The original packing box and material is the best choice for transport because the Styrofoam is customized to fit each printer. If you are moving a laser printer, remove the laser ink cartridge as the ink will spill and contaminate the laser engine. If you are moving a pin printer you should insert a piece of paper in the platen to secure the print head.

Preparing Your Refrigerator / Freezer for Storage

When a refrigerator or freezer is manufactured, little or no consideration is given to a family moving across country, or to the unit standing disconnected for long periods of time. When sold, normal consideration is only given to the fact that the unit will stay in one location and remain operational.

Moving companies take great care in safeguarding the possessions stored in their warehouses. Even with adequate air circulation, temperature extremes can occur which can cause discoloration or mildew. NOTE: Damage, caused by temperature extremes is one of the exclusions in almost all transportation insurance policies since it is not a result of a moving company's mishandling or negligence.

DISCOLORATION A chemical process caused by change of temperature over an extended period of time and one that is considered as an aggravation of a condition contributed in part to manufacturers flaw.

MILDEW Often preventable if you initiate the following steps:

DRY OUT Unplug and leave doors open 72 hours before load date.

DISINFECT Scrub thoroughly using 1 gallon water to ½ cup of mild household bleach.

KEEP SEAL SOFT Apply silicone lubricant to rubber strip.

VENTILATE Tie a soft non-abrasive strap around door(s) to help eliminate stale air.

ABSORB MOISTURE Preferred methods include charcoal granules as found in pet supply outlets; baking soda; or a silicone desiccant - ask your mover.

KEEP AIR FRESH Preferred methods include fresh ground coffee in porous container (nylon hose); or “Refer Sweet” - ask your mover.

Moving safety tips

Preparing household items

To guard your household goods against damage that could be caused by fire, explosion or leakage in the van.

Helpful Hints

Stoves
Must be disconnected prior to pickup. Be sure gas lines are shut off tight and capped, if possible. For electric ranges, if the coils are loose, they must be removed together with griddles, deep fryers and removable parts, and then packed separately.

Air Conditioners
Consult your authorized dealer or service man on your particular model. Some sealed units should be bolted down.

Dryers, Electric or Gas
Check with your service man. Motors may need to be checked and secured.

Sewing Machines
These do not need s0ecial servicing for local moving. For long distance, the driver will stuff paper in and around the machine and place paper between the lid and base to prevent rubbing.

Television Sets
Some sets require that they be checked before moving. Some color TV’s must be serviced both before and after moving. Television antennas should be removed from rooftops and disassembled.

Washers
Automatic washer must be serviced by an authorized service man. Motors should be checked and secured, tumbler action protected and fastened in place.
